Insurance

Most A rated American insurance companies cover your vehicle for collision and theft up to 50 miles into Mexico. American policies do not provide liability coverage in Mexico and are not recognized as proof of financial responsibility. Mexican law requires that you provide proof of financial responsibility from a Mexican insurance company if you are involved in an accident.

Green Angels

The Green Angels are a federally sponsored organization that patrols Mexico's main highways from 8 am to 8 pm. The Green Angels are trained mechanics who are also trained in basic first aid and carry oil, gasoline spare parts, tools and communications capabilities. You will only be charged for the equipment used; ie gasoline or spare parts, not for the mechanics services. The Green Angels get their name from the green and white trucks they drive.

Gas

Contrary to common myth, gas in Mexico performs better and cost less than the gas you buy in the United States. Fuel sold in the US contains additives to reduce the amount of emissions emitted into the air. The additives (Methanol, MTBE to name a few) increase the cost of the fuel and decrease your gas mileage. Your gas mileage will increase by about 10 percent when you use Mexican gas. Gas prices in Mexico are up to 50% less than in San Diego, yes 50% less. Fuel prices in Mexican border towns (Tijuana) are slightly higher than the rest of Mexico to discourage people from driving into Mexico to fill up. Fuel prices in Rosarito or further south are lower than border towns.

The New Road to Rosarito

|
A road between Otay Mesa and the south side of Rosarito was completed in 2006.
It was originally said to be a toll road but as of June 2008 there still isn't any sign of a toll booth to use the road.
On the south side the road connects with the free road 2 KM north of Calafia, south of Fox Studios.
You cannot get onto the new road from the Rosarito-Ensenada Toll Road, you must be on the free road.
The highway has two lanes in each direction with a center divide.
There are several grades so it might not be the best route if you're towing a big load.
The highway cuts through rural Baja and there isn't cell phone service most of the way and only one gas station.
The highway is goes around the back side of Rosarito and Tijuana coming out at the Tijuana-Tecate toll booth east of the Otay Mesa border crossing.
From the Otay Mesa border crossing, take Lib Ciudad Industrial / Ave 2do Eje Oriente Poniente east 8 KM then follow the signs south to Rosarito.
The first section of the road has some city cross traffic but the majority of the road is sparsely populated cow country.
If you're going to and from I-5 this route is 5 miles longer than than San Ysidro but you won't hit as much traffic and you save $5 in tolls.

SENTRI - Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection

The SENTRI program allows members to cross the border into the US using a special line that expedites the process. Using a SENTRI pass the border wait time is usually from zero to five or ten minutes. During congested times, Sunday at 2PM, the wait can be as long as 45 minutes. No matter what, you're better off in the SENTRI lane than fighting to keep your spot in the regular line.
SENTRI hours of operation for San Ysidro and Otay Mesa border crossings can be found with the border wait times below.
Note that the San Ysidro SENTRI lane will be open 24/7 until July 1, 2008.
